LA is weird, you guys. It’s pretty, but it’s weird. And a lot of it smells like pee.
Also, I took barely any photos because I was either too busy A) eating my way through La La Land, B) drinking all the muddled strawberry vodka drinks at Bar Lubitsch, or C) sitting in the car because EVERYBODY DRIVES EVERYWHERE.
On the agenda this weekend: house hunting. GROAN. What do you guys have going on?
James and I somehow scored three-day Lollapalooza passes only minutes before they sold out entirely, so you could say the stars aligned and angels sang … and my internet connection didn’t crap out like it usually does. I was a bundle of nerves as I waited in the ticket queue, and I also had to pee, but I knew that as soon as I got up, I’d miss the tickets. Doesn’t it always work out that way?
ANYHOODLE. This will be my third Lolla as a Chicago resident, and I’m totally convinced it’s going to be the best yet. I mean, everybody gets worked up about the lineup at first – you should have heard me complaining last year, sheesh – but this year’s schedule just speaks to me.
OK, so I’m not super thrilled with everybody, but there are more than enough on the bill to make it a worthwhile weekend. So who am I most excited to see? Take a peek.
5. Tove Lo
You guys know I love Tove Lo – I dedicated an entire post to her and her random fashion line – and I feel like my life is taking on new meaning with the chance to see her live. I’ve probably listened to her album, Queen of the Clouds, a billion times. And I like her filthy mouth.
4. Elle King

Speaking of filthy mouths, Elle King first caught my attention with her cover of the raunchy “My Neck, My Back,” which is certainly not for the faint of heart. I love her. She’s wonderful, and I am going to cross my fingers and toes that she belts that cover out along with tracks from her new cut, Love Stuff.
3. Circa Waves
My friend planted the Hot Chip dance party seed a few weeks ago, and it’s totally taken over my brain. And then I heard about Circa Waves, and their indie pop took over my brain even MORE. Who doesn’t want to get down in Grant Park with the city’s skyline as a backdrop? Certainly not me.
2. A$AP Rocky
Image via Mr. Porter
I’m super conflicted about putting the Pretty Motherf**ker himself (his words, not mine) so high on my must-see list, but it’s purely for selfish reasons. I want to compare him to his fellow A$AP Mobster, Ferg, who’s playing at Pitchfork just two weeks earlier. That, and I also want Rocky to make eye contact with me and instantly fall in love.
He’s probably going to suck live, but I just really, really love that guy.
I saw Givers three years ago as the opener at Passion Pit’s Lollapalooza aftershow, and they were so energetic and fun and SO much better than Passion Pit. I’ve been waiting ever since to see them again, and it’s safe to say I am going to completely lose my shit when it finally happens.
This list was way harder than I anticipated, because I am so excited about so many acts. Of Monsters and Men, Alabama Shakes, Florence + the Machine, Mick Jenkins, Tyler, the Creator, Daye Jack, Father John Misty, Wild Belle, MS MR, Marina and the Diamonds … I could really go on and on.
And I can’t help but wonder if the almighty Yeezus will join Sir Paul on stage at some point, because I would actually faint and miss the entire set.
I freaking love this lineup. And I freaking love Lollapalooza. And Chicago.
Anybody else looking forward to festival season, whether in Chicago or beyond?
I don’t know about you guys, but I am SO THANKFUL this week is over. I don’t know if it was the return of the cold weather or what, but weekend seemed to take three times as long to get here.
But enough of the small talk. Are YOU ready for a Friday Five? Let’s go LEGGO.
When James and I were on Oahu, we saw ramen shop lines that wrapped around the block. But having never had ramen (other than microwavable variety, of course), we didn’t see what the big deal was. Noodles and broth? Gimme a break. And gimme a burger.
Enter Furious Spoon, one of Milwaukee Avenue’s newest establishments, which prides itself on serving traditional ramen at affordable prices. Wanting to keep up with the trends, James and I decided to wait in line and give it a whirl, and we’ve yet to stop thinking about HOW FREAKING GOOD IT WAS.
Furious Spoon location and hours:
1571 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Wicker Park
- Monday-Thursday, Sunday: 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.
- Friday-Saturday: 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
- No reservations, no carry-out. Big-ass soup spoons.
Have you guys heard about Jimmy Whispers? Nah? It’s cool, I hadn’t either until my friend told me he was the NEXT BIG THING (her emphasis, not mine) and informed me of his free record release at Empty Bottle next Tuesday. Jimmy Whispers is also playing at Pitchfork this year, and you guys know what kind of nutcase I am about that shit.
Step 1: Listen to his new album in its entirety on Spin.com.
Step 2: If you like what you hear, RSVP for the free show at Empty Bottle next Tuesday.
Step 3: Go to Leghorn Chicken before the show and OMG SO GOOD. DROOL.
In the mood for music? Head to Mother’s tonight at 9 p.m. to see Saved by the Belvedere, a TV THEME COVER BAND. I KNOW. Totally worth having to venture out to the Viagra Triangle, honestly.
Or, are you in the mood for hair braids and tarot cards? Get ‘yer booty over to Lost Girls Vintage in Pilsen this Saturday and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. for a braid bar, tarot card readings, Moroccan-Inspired cocktails, and the launch of the Lost Girls Vintage Moroccan Collection.
There are some bloggers you just want to hug when you (finally!) meet them in real life, and I did just that to Lauren and Claire of Foxtail + Moss at an event last night. They were total peaches, and I’m probably going to try and force them to be my IRL friends outside the blogosphere. Weird?
Also, they feature really, really amazing projects on their blog, including a series of astrology stitch posters. I’m partial to Pisces for obvious reasons.
Seriously, check these gals out!
POTPOURRI (AKA THE RANDOM-ASS CATEGORY, NOT THE DRIED FLOWER VARIETY)
My beloved cat, Cha Cha, is starting her diet next week – she just doesn’t know it yet.
Here she is snoozin’ in the kitchen, her squishy body hanging off the cart. Also yes, this is a post spoiler, because I’m going to tell you all how to make a plate wall without spending a billion dollars on those hideous plate-hangers. GET YOUR VINTAGE CHINA READY.
What are you guys doing this weekend, in Chicago and beyond? Any good weather to look forward to?
